Why using a common language for describing the peristomal body shape is key

When it comes to the area around the stoma, no bodies are alike. But what language do we use to describe the peristomal area? And why is a shared language so critical to finding the best fit for patients with a stoma?

How the Peristomal Body Profile Terminology helps

In this two-part webinar series, you will learn how to assess the peristomal area using the Peristomal Body Profile Terminology and Assessment Tool. And you will also see how you can use these tools to help people with an outward peristomal body profile find the solution that works for them.

Part 1: An introduction to the Peristomal Body Profile Assessment Tool

As stoma care nurses, we recognise that there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all. No two bodies are alike. Yet, a patient’s body shape has a huge influence on the solutions we choose for that patient. So, the question is, how do we describe the differences in each patient’s body, so we can find the best possible solution for the individual patient?

The Peristomal Body Profile Terminology – a well-documented tool developed through a global consensus process involving 2,000 stoma care nurses – helps us to do that.

In this interactive session, we will introduce the Peristomal Body Profile Terminology, and show you how to use the Peristomal Body Profile Assessment Tool to assess your patients’ peristomal body profile and find the right care for them.

Part 2: How to support patients with peristomal curves or bulges

The second part of our Peristomal Body Profile series focuses on patients with peristomal curves or bulges, or an outward peristomal body profile, according to the Peristomal Body Profile Terminology. During this session, we will talk about how to define and describe the outward peristomal body profile using the Peristomal Body Profile Terminology. We will address common misconceptions regarding this body profile; its unique characteristics; and the physical and emotional challenges people with an outward peristomal body profile face. Finally, through a combination of discussion and exercises, you will learn how to address these challenges and help patients with an outward body profile find a solution that fits their needs.
