Why was the tool developed?
This self-assessment tool was developed to help build awareness amongst people living with MS that bladder problems are linked to MS. It is also aims to help them identify common bladder problems.
An international survey³ showed that most MS patients prefer information on bladder-related topics at diagnosis, before getting problems or when having the first signs of problems¹.
How the MS bladder check was validate
- The MS bladder check was developed by a cross-functional group from five different countries
- The validation process was completed in two phases where 10 experts participated
- The study was published in an international journal, Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders1.
- The findings from the study indicate that the MS bladder check tool is an appropriate method of highlighting bladder problems.
How to use the bladder check with your patients
The MS bladder check can be used in consultations to facilitate an open dialogue about bladder symptoms regardless of where your patient is on their MS journey. It is available online as a PDF so you can use it digitally or print copies to fill out with your patients. Patients can then take the completed bladder check home where they can reflect on the questions.
What happens after the bladder check is completed?
If your patient answers yes to any of the nine questions in the MS bladder check, and feels that it negatively impacts their life, it is important to offer support by making them aware of the solutions that exist and referring them to a specialist.
